Cabbage is everywhere right now, and there are no indications that the hype is slowing down anytime soon. In fact, according to Pinterest, cabbage is the trend of the year, and we are so on board. It’s cheap, delicious, and endlessly versatile.
If you haven’t spent much time cooking cabbage before, we’re here to help. We love a good creamy coleslaw, don’t get us wrong, but there are so many other ways to prepare it — give it the “melting” treatment, make a gratin, or, as I tried recently, pan fry it the Southern way with plenty of bacon.
What Makes Our Fried Cabbage So Amazing
They say bacon makes everything better, and that’s certainly the case with cabbage. In this recipe, you’ll use the bacon fat to cook diced onions and stir-fry the cabbage. The onions take on some of the smoky flavor, and the cabbage becomes almost buttery, while still maintaining some slightly crisp bits.
Salt, pepper, and garlic powder are always in my seasoning rotation, so I was delighted to see their invitation to the fried cabbage party. And while I don’t normally cook with smoked paprika, I loved the warm, deep flavor it added to the dish. My advice: Top your bowl with a little more black pepper, and it’s #chefskiss.
I couldn’t recommend this dish more. If you’re just starting to experiment with cooking cabbage, give this recipe a try. Or, if you already love cabbage but need more ideas, this is it! It comes together in less than 30 minutes and couldn’t be easier — or more delicious.
