My mom always keeps a jar of Golden Oreos in the pantry in our house. They are perfect for grabbing as a dessert after dinner, or for munching on as a snack in the middle of the day. And when that lid doesn’t get screwed on tightly and the Oreos go stale, it’s honestly a pretty big deal in our household: Someone gets in trouble for ruining our favorite treat.
With my love for traditional Golden Oreos now firmly established, it should come as no surprise that I’m always excited when I learn about new flavors from the brand. Just today, Oreo announced its latest limited-edition flavor: Firecracker Pop Oreo. I was able to get my hands on them the day the news broke — here are my thoughts.
What You Should Know About Oreo Firecracker Pop Cookies
The newest Oreo flavor is inspired by the classic Firecracker Popsicle. I have distinct memories of enjoying these red, white, and blue Popsicles on every Fourth of July when I was growing up, and this Oreo launch is here just in time for America’s 250th birthday.
These new cookies are filled with three different flavored (and colored) creams: blue raspberry (blue, of course), lemon (white), and cherry (red). All three flavors are stacked on top of one another (not mixed) to create a distinct, multilayered taste experience every time you take a bite. The cookies themselves are classic Golden Oreos.
This latest Oreo flavor is available starting May 4 at retailers nationwide for a limited time and while supplies last. And they will have a starting retail price of $5.79.
My Honest Review of Oreo Firecracker Pop Cookies
I must admit that I was a little hesitant about trying out this new flavor (treats that are colored blue are not usually up my alley). However, I did actually enjoy these! The taste is similar to a fruity Pop-Tart. You get the pastry-like flavor of the Golden Oreo, which pairs wonderfully with the sweet raspberry, lemon, and cherry filling.
The cherry creme filling tasted exactly like a red Popsicle. The lemon filling was a little tangy and tart, which I really liked. The blue raspberry part of the filling had a very pungent smell when I first opened the package. It also had a slightly overwhelming taste, which overpowered the other flavors. I know the whole point of it being “blue raspberry” was to replicate the Popsicle’s patriotic appearance, but I just wish more brands would flavor things with straight-up raspberry. The blue color really throws me off.
This flavor evoked nostalgic memories for a couple of colleagues in our office. Reid, who loved the new flavor, said it “reminds me of summer camp and Spiderman Popsicles at the pool.” Brian also said the creme filling reminded him of the red, white, and blue Popsicles from when he was a kid.
There was a little more filling in this cookie than in a traditional Oreo cookie, but not so much that it looked double-stuffed. Overall, this new flavor really surprised me. I would have it again, but I think I could only have a few at a time (unlike my beloved original Golden Oreos).
