Downdetector and Speedtest — the free platforms that allow people on the web to quickly check internet speeds or see if an online platform may be down — will soon have a new owner. On Tuesday, the consulting and IT services provider Accenture announced that it has agreed to acquire the Ookla-owned platforms from Ziff Davis for $1.2 billion, as reported earlier by Reuters. In the press release, Accenture CEO Julie Sweet says the company will use Ookla’s products to capture data that will help “clients across business and government scale AI safely.” Ziff Davis, which owns CNET, IGN, and Eurogamer,…
Veteran Tennessee guard Kaiya Wynn is leaving the program ahead of the postseason, she announced this week. The fifth-year player cited Senior Night in Knoxville as her “breaking point.”The Lady Vols honored their seniors on Sunday while hosting No. 5 Vanderbilt. Wynn, who has played 103 games for Tennessee in her career but just nine this season, sat on the bench the whole game but was asked to check in with 15 seconds remaining. By that point, Tennessee was about to pick up its sixth consecutive loss.”For the past five years I have given my all for Tennessee and have…
The screen is brighter now, reaching a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, and I haven’t had any trouble reading it in sunny conditions (though it hasn’t been as sunny as I’d like it to be these past few weeks). I appreciate the glass upgrade from Gorilla Glass 3 to Gorilla Glass 7i. It should be more protective, and anecdotally, I don’t see a single scratch on the Pixel 10a’s screen after two weeks of use. (I’d still snag a screen protector to be safe.)Photograph: Julian ChokkattuAnother notable upgrade is in charging speeds—30-watt wired charging and 10-watt wireless charging. I’ll admit…
This month, Bake Club takes inspiration from a certain popular chain restaurant, for our own take on flaky, cheesy biscuits. This version is transformed with the help of Old Bay seasoning. Hosts and senior Test Kitchen editors Shilpa Uskokovic and Jesse Szewczyk make the case for why biscuits are a must-have for any occasion. As Shilpa puts it, “Anything bread can do…a biscuit can do better.”Jesse and Shilpa also tackle listener questions. And iconic baker and bestselling cookbook author Cheryl Day—a biscuit guru who made them everyday for 22 years in her bakery—stops by the clubhouse. Cheryl’s advice for the…
Things are getting tricky on the complexion front. As makeup becomes more focused on skin-care benefits, the line between the best tinted sunscreens and other skin-evening heroes becomes more blurred. Many of our favorite foundations, tinted moisturizers, and such are now enriched some level of sun protection as an added bonus. In narrowing down this very list, Vogue’s beauty shopping editor Kiana Murden and me got into an interesting debate: what actually constitutes a tinted sunscreen?“A tinted sunscreen is a product that’s primarily an SPF and also has pigment added to offer light-to-medium makeup coverage,” explains Britta Plug, esthetician and…

The calendar has flipped to March, which means the NBA playoffs start next month! But before we get there, there are plenty of things to be decided over the next six weeks. The Oklahoma City Thunder became the first team to clinch a postseason berth with a win on Sunday. Their lead over the San Antonio Spurs is just three games, however, as the standings in the always-competitive Western Conference are tighter than ever. With four games currently separating the play-in teams and the No. 3 seed, and with plenty of high-profile games on the calendar, the standings are bound to…
X Chat’s standalone app isn’t the only new service X is testing this week. The company has also begun offering select users invites to its X Money payments service, which was previously being tested internally among X employees. These invites, however, were not doled out in the typical way. Instead, X owner Elon Musk worked with William Shatner (yes, the actor) to invite people into the beta in exchange for a $1,000 donation to Shatner’s charity that supports childrens’ and veterans’ organizations. On X, the “Star Trek” actor has been sharing information about the X Money service and its beta…

Sea-level rise is a key measure of how climate change will shape our future. Coastal communities rely on accurate coastal hazard assessments to manage escalating flood risks, protect infrastructure, and mitigate economic losses—but new findings show that most of the research is inherently flawed. The study, published Wednesday in Nature, found that a staggering number of sea-level rise impact assessments are based on drastic underestimations of current sea levels. Of the 385 peer-reviewed scientific papers the authors analyzed, more than 90% relied on assumed sea levels based on gravitational models called “geoids” rather than direct sea-level and land-elevation measurements. Consequently,…
