AI agents like OpenClaw have recently exploded in popularity precisely because they can take the reins of your digital life. Whether you want a personalized morning news digest, a proxy that can fight with your cable company’s customer service, or a to-do list auditor that will do some tasks for you and prod you to resolve the rest, agentic assistants are built to access your digital accounts and carry out your commands. This is helpful—but has also caused a lot of chaos. The bots are out there mass-deleting emails they’ve been instructed to preserve, writing hit pieces over perceived snubs,…
Block said Thursday it’s laying off more than 4,000 employees, or about half of its head count. The stock skyrocketed more than 24% in extended trading. “Today we shared a difficult decision with our team,” Jack Dorsey, Block’s co-founder and CEO, wrote in a letter to shareholders. “We’re reducing Block by nearly half, from over 10,000 people to just under 6,000, which means that over 4,000 people are being asked to leave or entering into consultation.”Block CFO Amrita Ahuja said the job cuts will position the company “for our next phase of long term growth.””We are choosing to shift how…
Some designers go on inspiration trips. JJ Martin does vision quests. Her latest was to Ireland, where she visited “crumbling ruins, galactically charged rocks, and energy portals.” The experience culminated at Trinity College in Dublin where her group had the opportunity to see the Book of Kells, a ninth century illuminated manuscript. “It literally looks like they were all taking psychedelics,” Martin shared. “I couldn’t believe what I saw and I got super inspired.” The swirling, kaleidoscopic motifs and animalistic designs of the Columban monks’ colorful drawings were reimagined by Martin and her team as prints on pajama sets, jumpsuits,…
The tide has seemingly turned on one of the biggest Hollywood deals in recent memory. While Netflix had been positioned as the most likely company to take over Warner Bros., the persistence of Paramount has apparently paid off. On the heels of Paramount submitting a higher bid—one that the Warner Bros. Discovery board deemed a “superior proposal” earlier today—Netflix has responded by announcing it will not be raising its own offer. Netflix released a statement on its website, explaining the decision. The response comes from co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters. “The transaction we negotiated would have created shareholder value…
Getty Images Two University of Nebraska-Omaha women’s basketball players are being praised for springing into action after a sinkhole opened in the middle of traffic on Tuesday. Once Olivia Borsutzki and Esra Kurban realized two cars had been swallowed by the concrete while waiting at a red light, they left their respective vehicles to help those trapped.”I was still in the car and I saw a man in a hole,” Borsutzki told On3. “I was like, ‘I need to help.’ Nobody was helping.” When a sedan and pickup truck surprisingly sunk into the earth, the vehicles closest to the sinkhole backed…
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said Thursday that he “cannot in good conscience accede to [the Pentagon’s] request” to give the military unrestricted access to its AI systems. “Anthropic understands that the Department of War, not private companies, makes military decisions,” Amodei wrote in a statement. “However, in a narrow set of cases, we believe AI can undermine, rather than defend, democratic values. Some uses are also simply outside the bounds of what today’s technology can safely and reliably do.” The two cases are: mass surveillance of Americans and fully autonomous weapons with no human in the loop. The Pentagon believes…

Block is the latest business to announce layoffs, with the operator of payment platforms Square and Cash App opting to cut jobs in favor of using more AI tools. The financial tech company, helmed by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, is slashing its current staff of 10,000 to “just under 6,000.” CNBC highlighted a letter Block sent to shareholders announcing the decision to nearly halve its workforce. According to the message from Dorsey:”The core thesis is simple. Intelligence tools have changed what it means to build and run a company. We’re already seeing it internally. A significantly smaller team, using the…
