Hello and welcome to Regulator, a newsletter for Verge subscribers about tech politicking in the age of Trump. If you’re a subscriber, you are dominant and talented, like the Seattle Seahawks. If you’re not a subscriber yet, it’s time to get your act together, like the New England Patriots. (I’m from Boston and I’m allowed to say this.) The biggest tech story dominating Washington right now is, incidentally, a media story. Last week, shortly after The Washington Post laid off 400 staffers and closed many of its desks, and before its absentee CEO Will Lewis got summarily shoved out, I…
Manchester United pulled out yet another rabbit from the hat in stoppage time, leaving the London Stadium with a point from their Premier League clash against West Ham United on Tuesday.Benjamin Sesko stepped forward to score yet another crucial late goal, and he will be chomping at the bit to start games from now on.AdvertisementThe performance was poor, and showed that Michael Carrick will struggle to deal with two games a week with such a thin squad. However, the manner of the draw will have pleased the caretaker head coach, and former United midfielder Nicky Butt alluded to the same after…

This report is from this week’s CNBC’s The China Connection newsletter, which brings you insights and analysis on what’s driving the world’s second-largest economy. You can subscribe here. The big storyOver the last few years in China, it’s gotten easier to buy food straight from the farm.Whether it’s boxes of apples or bags of vacuum-sealed corn-on-the-cob, online orders placed through popular e-commerce apps take just a couple of days to arrive in Beijing.China’s food safety standards are still a work in progress. But what I’ve noticed is that even if the apples from a nearby supermarket taste artificial — the ones I…
Sea is currently blowing up in China. Having opened a store there last year, the brand is already scouting for a second location. What Monica Paolini and Sean Monahan are exporting is an aesthetic that mixes (Eastern European) rustic motifs with prep, and New York edge with a bit of sportiness—at moderate prices. While this fall collection participated in many of the trends we’ve been seeing of late—corduroy, heritage fabrics, lace-trimmed lingerie pieces, caped cuts, track pants, asymmetries, and Take Ivy touches—it was difficult to place it within the context of “domestic surrealism” that Paolini had envisioned. The addition of pearls…
On Tuesday night, Elon Musk gathered the employees of xAI for an all-hands meeting. Evidently, he wanted to talk about the future of his AI company, and specifically, how it relates to the moon. According to The New York Times, which reports that it heard the meeting, Musk told employees that xAI needs a lunar manufacturing facility, a factory on the moon that will build AI satellites and fling them into space via a giant catapult. “You have to go to the moon,” he said, per the Times. The move, he explained, will help xAI harness more computing power than…
NBA Hater Report: Giannis Antetokounmpo needs to get off his loyalty high horse … unless he means it
As last week’s trade deadline grew closer it became increasingly clear that Giannis Antetokounmpo was not going to get moved. It was a smart move by the Bucks. They’ll have more, and probably better, offers to mull over this summer when most teams will have an extra draft pick in 2033 to trade. Some teams, like the Miami Heat, will have two more trade-eligible draft picks than they had at the deadline. The Warriors have paths to as many as five. This is to say nothing of some of the most asset-rich teams that weren’t ready to do business now but…
Toyota unveiled the new 2027 Highlander, a fully redesigned midsize SUV that marks the brand’s first three-row electric vehicle for the US market and the first Toyota EV assembled in America. It’s a familiar name — Toyota has been selling gas Highlanders for over 20 years — with an all-new powertrain aimed directly at one of the most popular vehicle segments in the market today. To say this is Toyota’s best chance to best its EV rivals would be an understatement. The announcement comes at a tumultuous time for the world’s best-selling automaker. Toyota’s strategy of emphasizing hybrid vehicles over pure…
OpenAI has reportedly fired safety executive Ryan Beirmeister, whose title at the company was VP of product policy. According to the Wall Street Journal, which broke the story, Beirmeister was told her firing was related to sexual discrimination against a male colleague. “The allegation that I discriminated against anyone is absolutely false,” Beiermeister told the journal in a statement. According to anonymous sources who spoke to the Journal, The firing, which apparently occurred in early January, came after Beirmeister had stated her opposition to the ChatGPT adult mode (or erotica mode?) Sam Altman announced in October of last year. Beirmeister…
