As we expected, Meta has begun laying off more than 1,000 employees from its Reality Labs division, which focused on virtual reality and metaverse products, Bloomberg reports. The company will refocus on developing wearables, like its recent batch of AI-powered Ray-Ban smart glasses, according to a memo from CTO Andrew Bosworth. The news isn’t too surprising. Reality Labs has lost more than $70 billion since the beginning of 2021, and while Meta has done a solid job of delivering desirable consumer VR headsets and smart glasses, that business hasn’t been nearly profitable enough to justify the cost. And of course, Mark…
Core U.S. consumer prices rose less than predicted in December, reinforcing hopes that inflation is tempering as the Federal Reserve contemplates its next move on interest rates.Excluding volatile food and energy prices, the consumer price index showed a seasonally adjusted 0.2% gain on a monthly basis and 2.6% annually, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday. Both were 0.1 percentage point below expectations. Though they look at both measures, Fed officials consider core inflation a better long-run gauge of where inflation is heading. On a headline basis, the CPI posted an increase of 0.3% for the month, putting the all-items annual…
Usage of voice AI in sales, marketing, customer support, and consumer applications has shot up in the last few years. As a result, model providers have seen increased business, along with investor interest. On the back of this demand, today, Deepgram said that it has raised $130 million in a Series C round led by AVP at a $1.3 billion dollar valuation. The round also saw existing investors such as Alkeon, In-Q-Tel, Madrona, Tiger, Wing, and Y Combinator put in more money. Plus, new investors like Alumni Ventures, Columbia University, Princeville Capital, Twilio, and SAP joined the round. The company has…

The most interesting story at this year’s CES was just a little tiny bundle of technology. One way to look at Lego’s new Smart Brick is as something like a Raspberry Pi, an endlessly remixable gizmo with infinite hacking potential — it can be anything, in the best possible way. Another way to look at it is as a crushing blow to creativity, a new way for things to break or be paywalled, and an affront to everything we love about Lego. Maybe it’s both. Or somewhere in between. On this episode of The Vergecast, The Verge’s Sean Hollister explains how…
Cabbage has often—and unfairly—gotten looked over for flashier veggies and protein-dense superfoods. But as far as nutritional food options go, the leafy green is pretty hard to beat. A staple in different cuisines (American coleslaw! Middle Eastern malfouf! Chinese suan la bai cai!), cabbage has been a longtime favorite amongst global chefs.“Much of this stems from its versatility,” Woldy Reyes, chef and author of the cookbook In The Kusina: My Seasonal Filipino Cooking, tells Vogue. “We are seeing a growing trend of chefs utilizing it as a centerpiece, such as cabbage steaks, rather than a side dish. The culinary appeal…
Someone was going to ask him eventually, and the time has arrived: Elijah Wood has responded to Ian McKellan’s cheeky tease last summer that a character named Frodo would be in Andy Serkis’ new Lord of the Rings film, The Hunt for Gollum. And the answer is… he isn’t saying if that’s true or that he’ll be playing Frodo if it is. But he’s sure thrilled the movie is being made. Reporting on a panel it hosted at Fan Expo New Orleans, ScreenRant writes that Wood was quizzed about McKellan’s remarks and gave a clever, cagey answer: “I can neither…
Anyone looking for signs of Chelsea’s era under new management would have been left wanting on Saturday night. The scoreline might have been more impressive than most in the dog days of Enzo Maresca’s tenure, a 5-1 win at Charlton Athletic of the Championship, but this was still a team that hoarded possession and that was prepared to be patient in its pursuit of high quality chances. As Liam Rosenior explained after the game, he had doing “nothing tactical, nothing technical” with his new squad. The former Strasbourg manager believes he has inherited a “good team” that has been “well-coached.” This…
My kids also enjoyed Save the Bloogs, an obviously Lemmings-inspired platformer, where you use the pieces as ladders, bridges, and canons to guide the cute wee Bloogs away from impending death. Board Arcade is the only one that reuses pieces, with spaceships and robots adding physical controls to versions of classics like Snake and Asteroids. Most of the games are marked as age 6 and up, and I’d expect young kids to love this. The dull digital pet Mushka is clearly aimed at wee ones. Sadly, a couple of the more interesting titles, international mystery Spycraft and strategy face-off Thrasos, are…
