Google today announced a new open standard, called the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) for AI agent-based shopping, at the National Retail Federation (NRF) conference. The standard, developed with companies like Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart, lets agents work across different parts of customer buying processes, including discovery and post-purchase support. For a while, it seemed like everyone had a TiVo. It was a plot point on major TV shows; it had A-list Hollywood fans; it became a verb as ubiquitous as Google or Xerox. The love was well-earned, since TiVo had created a product that felt genuinely like magic. You could pause live TV. And rewind it. And even set shows to record for later, knowing they’d be there whenever you needed them. There’s a reason you almost certainly don’t have a TiVo now, though. The company quickly became a victim of its own success, and never managed to turn its…

I feel fortunate to have walked 90 years in my shoes. I am truly lucky. I really have lived 1,000 times over.” Those are the opening lines of the final entry in my grandma Zelda’s journal—a 270-page leather-bound journal she wrote small entries in almost every morning during the final decade of her life. In it she reflected on lessons she had learned, lessons she…

The Green Bay Packers experienced about as violent of a whiplash as a team can on a football field in their 31-27 wild card meltdown at the Chicago Bears on Saturday night. Quarterback Jordan Love played near-perfect football on Green Bay’s first three drives, tossing a trio of touchdowns. All the while, Bears coach Ben Johnson appeared to be over his skis with the Bears turning the ball over on downs on their own 32. This was going to be a rout. And if not a rout, it was going to be a decisive win and a statement that the Packers, who…
