In The Devil Wears Prada, protagonist Andy Sachs refers to Runway’s willowy fleet of fashion-mad staffers as “clackers,” evoking the sound of their impossibly high heels skittering across the office floors.
Well, while there is certainly some clacking at the start of our May 2026 cover video, these two are no Elias-Clark sycophants. As Meryl Streep (in character as DWP’s Miranda Priestly) and Vogue’s Anna Wintour meet at a sleek white elevator, the two women—the top brass of glossies both imagined and very real—can’t resist sizing each other up. In the 2003 novel, it’s suggested they are rivals: after Miranda fires Andy in Paris, her other assistant, Emily, encourages Andy to send her résumé “over to Anna Wintour—they’ve never liked each other very much.” But more than 20 years after the book and its era-defining film adaptation, the two struggle to place each other.
“Don’t I know you from somewhere?” Priestly asks.
“You do look… familiar,” comes Wintour’s curious reply.
Did they meet at the Grand Palais? Maybe the Oscars? The Met Gala? (That earns a “Deffffinitely not” from Priestly.) Well, wherever they’ve met—and however they know each other—at least they like each other’s shoes.
