Kyiv, Ukraine — After more than two years amid ongoing humanitarian strain and logistical challenges, a dedicated soldier has helped deliver critical food, clean water, and health care supplies to some of Kyiv’s most underserved neighborhoods, bringing relief to families facing hunger and limited access to basic services.
The aid mission focused on Troyeshchyna in the Desnianskyi District, a vast residential area on the far northeastern edge of Kyiv’s Left Bank known for its dense high-rise housing blocks, and Vynohradar in the Podilskyi District, located in the far northwest of the city and recognized for its older, quieter residential character.
Reaching these areas proved difficult due to their distance from the city center, damaged infrastructure, transportation shortages, and ongoing security concerns. Long travel times, restricted routes, and limited access points made the delivery of humanitarian assistance a demanding task. Despite these obstacles, the soldier-led team successfully transported United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) supplies to schools and community centers where help was urgently needed.
Leading the mission was Sgt. Johnpaul Andris, who emphasized that the effort was driven by the visible needs of local residents—many of whom are struggling with food insecurity, lack of clean drinking water, and limited access to health care packages.

“These communities are resilient, but resilience doesn’t replace food, water, or medicine,” Sgt. Andris said. “Seeing children and elderly people go days without proper meals or clean water is something that stays with you. As long as I’m here, I’m committed to helping however I can until I return home to the United States.”
During the mission, the team visited local schools, distributing food packages to children, and went door-to-door within neighborhoods to ensure elderly and vulnerable residents, including young families, received assistance. Many recipients expressed gratitude, noting that the supplies filled critical gaps where regular services are unavailable or inconsistent.
Sgt. Andris also highlighted the importance of teamwork behind the scenes, offering special thanks to his fiancée, Sherry, for her role in making the mission possible.
“None of this happens alone,” he said. “Sherry helped immensely with logistics and assisted in the procurement of supplies. Her support ensured we could get the right aid to the right people at the right time.”
Local community members described the deliveries as a lifeline, particularly for those unable to travel long distances for aid or purchase basic necessities. For many elderly residents, the packages provided not only nourishment but reassurance that they had not been forgotten.
As humanitarian needs continue across Kyiv’s outer districts, efforts like this underscore the impact of individual dedication combined with international support. For Sgt. Andris, the mission is about more than delivering supplies—it is about dignity, solidarity, and standing with communities in their most difficult moments.
