Puffs, brushes, and compacts—oh my! On-the-go dry shampoos have taken on several new forms that prioritize portability. For anyone who needs a midday refresh (post-workout, pre–happy hour, or somewhere in between), these mess-free, aerosol-free options are as practical as they are effective. They slip easily into a bag and make touch-ups feel discreet and controlled—basically the opposite of the gamble with loose powder.
“Dry shampoo that is powder-based is more of a true, classic dry shampoo,” says pro hairstylist Travis Speck, referencing iconic picks like Klorane’s formula (a staple since 1971). “It absorbs the oils better than an aerosol and leaves the feeling cleaner fresher and lighter—Aerosols can get very heavy fast.”
Vogue’s Favorite Dry Shampoo On-The-Go
Air pollutants aside, aerosol dry shampoos have never worked for me—they leave my hair stiff, almost starchy; which is why I’ve taken an an anything-but-aerosol approach. Powders, by contrast, bring volume back without killing movement. The catch though, for me, has always been the application. Trying to get the right amount at the roots feels less like a beauty ritual, and more like seasoning a dish without a recipe. One too many taps and suddenly I’ve overdone it—standing in front of the mirror looking less “freshly revived” and more like George Washington in an 18th-century powdered wig.
That’s where portable dry shampoo formulas—especially puffs—really shine, by streamlining the entire experience. It’s no wonder powder-based formulas are very much still loved by pros: “For editorial stylists, powder dry shampoos are a staple and most have one at the ready in their kit or at their station,” Speck says.
A dramatic chop from mermaid lengths to a bob, unpredictable weather swings, and a texture that’s suddenly leaning oilier than usual—lately, my hair has been going through it. Throughout each style, I needed something I could keep at my desk for quick bang fixes between wash days—something as effortless as a lipstick touch-up. That’s when I found Briogeo’s dry shampoo puff, which launched in December and completely changed my routine. A quick twist unlocks the packaging, and a few pats at the roots refreshes my hair with ease—no finesse required. Another standout had been hiding in plain sight: Violette_FR’s version, which pairs a powder formula with a built-in brush that not only dispenses product, but sweeps it seamlessly through the lengths of my bangs. And there’s been plenty more travel-friendly, and spritz-free formats where those come from—scroll to discover some of my favorite formulas I’m known to whip out when things get a little greasy.
