I exclusively grocery shop at Trader Joe’s. What can I say? I love its affordable prices, delicious frozen food, exciting snacks, and rotating inventory. I can always count on good ol’ TJ’s to send me home with everything on my shopping list, plus a few more items just for fun.
One department I recently realized I’ve been sleeping on at Trader Joe’s is its bakery. Aside from Trader Joe’s sourdough loaves, I don’t normally give the baked goods a second thought. However, the store just brought back its fan-favorite lemon-flavored mini sheet cake, and I was so eager to try it. After my first bite, I think it’s safe to say that I’m going to frequent the bakery section more often now.
What You Should Know About Trader Joe’s Lemon Flavored Mini Sheet Cake
Trader Joe’s has plenty of other popular sheet cakes, like its recent toasted coconut flavor we loved, but this one scores some rave reviews online. The lemon flavor is actually a returning item, but this year we finally got to try it for ourselves.
The cake’s description is pretty simple: It’s a lemon-flavored cake topped with a lemon cream cheese frosting and finished with lemon zest. Sometimes, as this cake proves, simple is best.
My Honest Review of Trader Joe’s Lemon Flavored Mini Sheet Cake
I am a big fan of lemon desserts, so it was no surprise to me that I enjoyed this cake. What was a surprise to me was that two of my colleagues who claimed to “not love lemon” also really liked this sheet cake.
Everyone’s favorite part (mine included) was the frosting. You definitely taste the lemon, but the cream cheese flavor is also very strong. Cream cheese frosting works especially well with lemon, in my opinion, because the brightness of the fruit helps cut through the richness and creaminess of the icing. It was so good!
If I had to give the cake one complaint, I thought it was a little dry (I saw a few comments online with the same note). It’s not dry enough to deter me from eating the cake (and the icing is a huge help in this department); I just wish it were a little more moist. But my opinion was not shared by one colleague in the office, who said that it was difficult not to eat the whole cake himself. “As far as store-bought prepackaged cakes go, I’m on board,” he added.
Shopping Editor Mara Weinraub said the Trader Joe’s mini sheet cake reminded her of her childhood favorite frozen Sara Lee pound cake. While she really liked the lemon flavor and sweet, tangy taste, the frosting really was the star of the show for her. And I wouldn’t disagree.
